Join Super Sonia on our Sponsored Walk

We are holding our second annual walk on April 21 and walkers may raise an eyebrow or two along the route. Fancy dress is being encouraged and our CEO Sonia will be donning a Superwoman outfit to lead the way.

Sonia says she hopes the walk will raise awareness of the Carers’ Centre’s work as well as funds.

‘It may seem silly walking in a fancy dress outfit, but as well as being fun it makes a real point. Often carers can be hidden in our society, tirelessly working to look after someone who is sick or disabled. We want to make them seen and ensure they get the acknowledgement and support they deserve.’

‘Obviously we’d also love to raise as much as possible but we also want people to get involved with their community, so all we’re asking is that people try to raise £25. Our walk in 2016 raised over £3,000 which was a great result for our first sponsored walk. We hope we can smash that target this year!’

With both 3 & 6 mile routes along the cycle path to Saltford, this family friendly event is accessible to all. The funds raised will make a real difference to local people who are caring for sick, disabled or frail loved ones.

The walk will also be an opportunity to say farewell to Sonia, who after eight years in post, is moving on from her role as Chief Executive. She is pursuing interests abroad but will stay on as a ‘distance fundraiser’ to continue writing bids and grant applications for the Centre. We are so glad Sonia can join us for the walk before she heads out on her next adventure!

Our Sponsored Birthday Walk

Walk1The sun shone on our Bath Centre last Sunday as 55 fantastic walkers completed our 20th Birthday Sponsored Walk through the Two Tunnels. It was amazing to see such a range of people walking, including some singers from the Jenny Peplow choir (who performed a fundraising concert for us just a few weeks ago!) and 9 year old Jack, who was eager to get going right away. After a welcome from Claire and Janine, the walkers set off at 11am, with smiles all round and even a few dogs!

Thanks to the fabulous weather, many of our walkers completed the full 9 mile route, only stopping midway for a pub lunch or a picnic –although Steve was on hand with the minibus for any carers that just wanted to complete the 4.5mile walk. Back at the centre, our walkers were rewarded for their time and effort with cream teas and mocktails, provided by our Chair of Trustees Jill Tremellen.

Join us for our Sponsored Walk!

To mark the start of National Carers Week, we at BANES Carers Centre are holding our first ever sponsored walk on Sunday, 5th June. The walk starts at 11am and will take our carers through the mysteries of the Two Tunnels, all the way to the Hope and Anchor in Midford, where our walkers can reward themselves with a pub lunch.

We have 4.5 or 9 mile options so the walkers can pick a route that’s best for them. Walkers can register as individuals or a whole family – our only ask is that they try and raise £50 in sponsorship money, though is just a goal, not a requirement! “Obviously we’d love to raise as much as possible but we also want people to get involved with their community,” says Janine, our Senior Development Manager.

Community Activators and carers stretching before a walk
Community Activators and carers stretching before a walk

February is drawing to a close and the nation is divided on the issue of health – while some people have tried and failed to lose weight in the New Year, others have given up their favourite treats for lent. New fads to improve health seem to emerge every week, but for carers, it can be difficult to keep up.

According to the latest census, carers providing regular, unpaid care for their loved ones are twice as likely to have poorer health compared to non-carers, and almost 700,000 carers reported their health as ‘not good’. A further 35% of carers looking after someone for 20 hours or more reported having a limiting longstanding illness.

While the rest of the nation struggle with their increasing waistlines, we have a service specifically to help carers with their health. Jane and Kath (our Community Activators) have been working for three years to help carers gain confidence and lose weight, and they are continuing to improve the health and wellbeing of carers through breaks, activities and one-to-one meetings for another six months.

Kath and Jane provide personalised help and advice on what exercise might suit you best and special nutritional tips to get you healthy and happy. Their advice has helped over 500 carers and we’re grateful for all the work they’ve done so far – we can’t wait to see how many more carers they will help in the next few months!

Kath and Jane’s next project is getting people on board and ready to take part in the Carers’ Centre’s sponsored walk on Sunday 5th June, to celebrate our 20th birthday. The walk, kicking off Carers’ Week 2016, aims to raise awareness of carers and the issues they face in our community as well as funds for the centre. Kath and Jane will be running weekly walking groups in the coming months to prepare our carers for our trek through the Two Tunnels, so if you fancy raising money for the Carers Centre, please join us!!
