Celebrating Carers 2016 – the results!

Celebrating2016_logoOur annual awards ceremony was held in October and once again the event was hosted by the fantastic Ali Vowles of the BBC. It was a chance to recognise our unsung heroes: carers, volunteers, and partners and to look back over what we’ve achieved this year.

The evening was made possible by the generosity of Sirona Care & Health and by our other wonderful sponsors; Bath College, Curo, Gerrard Financial Consulting, Gradwell Communications, Minuteman Press Bath and Way Ahead Care. Continue reading Celebrating Carers 2016 – the results!

A remembrance gift from our Dutch friends!

ben-howlett-plants-bulbs-at-carers-centreWe were delighted to welcome Bath’s MP, Ben Howlett, to the Carers’ Centre last Friday, when he took up his trowel on Remembrance Day to help plant 100 tulip bulbs donated to the B&NES Carers’ Centre by the Bath-Alkmaar Twinning Association.

The bulbs are part of a consignment of 5,000 donated to the City from its twin town in the Netherlands, to help mark 70 years of friendship between the two cities.

Other bulbs are being planted in the Orange Grove, in Parade Gardens, and in junior and infant schools across the City. BATA Chairman, Martin Broadbent, explained: Continue reading A remembrance gift from our Dutch friends!

Carers: the backbone of our communities

pcs8906cropped1-239x248Carers are part of the backbone of our communities and the annual awards night held by the Carers’ Centre is a fabulous opportunity to applaud their selflessness, says Sirona chief executive Janet Rowse.

Sirona Care & Health, which provides specialist community health and adult social care across Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and surrounding area, is the title sponsor of the Celebrating Carers event.

Janet said: “Our staff work day in day out supporting individuals and families but they do not do it alone. They are supported by carers, volunteers and other partners and all of these people working together really makes a difference to the lives of others. Introducing our Celebrating Carers 2016 Sponsors!

Hosting Celebrating Carers is one of the highlights of our year here at the Carers’ Centre – our chance to really shine a light on our carers, and show why we are so passionate about supporting them. Even so, it isn’t cheap to host the awards, and we wouldn’t be able to make Celebrating Carers 2016 the great event it is without the support of 6 local businesses.

sirona-logoWe’re delighted that Sirona Care & Health agreed to be our headline sponsor, making a generous donation to enable us to recognise the ‘unsung heroes’ in the local community. Sirona provides specialist community health and adult social care across Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and surrounding area.

Janet Rowse, Chief Executive at Sirona, said the night was an opportunity to applaud carers for their selflessness. “Carers are the unsung heroes in health and social care…they are crucial and this event puts them centre stage where they deserve,” said Janet. “This is a special occasion for a special group of people and Sirona is proud to be supporting it.”

Five other businesses will be sponsoring an award at the event

Curo and Wayahead Care are sponsoring our Unsung Hero Awards, given to carers who nominated for their dedication to caring. Curo is a not-for-profit housing association, a recognised house builder, and an award-winning provider of health and support services. Wayahead Care offer homecare for people of all ages and with varying disabilities to ensure their independence is maintained

Bath College are sponsoring our Young Carer Making a Difference Award, awarded to a young carer who has impressed and inspired us by making a contribution that makes a positive difference to others.

Gerrard Financial Consulting, financial advice specialists for the charity sector, are sponsoring our Young Carer Art Award (5 – 9 category)

Finally Gradwell Communications, are sponsoring our Community Award, given to a local organisation that goes the “extra mile” to support carers and/or the Carers’ Centre. Gradwell are based in the centre of Bath and provide award-winning calls, unrivalled connectivity and accessible cloud services for business.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors for their generosity – we couldn’t do it without you! For more information on Celebrating Carers, please visit our website.

Why Celebrate Carers?

Celebrating2016_logoEach year we hold an awards ceremony called Celebrating Carers. We’re delighted that Sirona Care and Health have agreed to sponsor this year’s awards, helping us to make it bigger and better than ever. But why Celebrate Carers?

The answer is very simple: carers are the unsung heroes in our communities. Tirelessly, day after day, they play a vital role in supporting the people they care for. Often, they have to juggle this with managing their own lives – going to work (or school for young carers); looking after other family members; doing daily tasks in their own house. It’s a role that can be tiring, stressful and lonely. And it’s role which doesn’t end at 5 o’clock, like most jobs. There is rarely, if ever, a holiday. It’s a 24/7 responsibility having someone relying on you to help with their care.

So Celebrating Carers is just that – our chance to celebrate all that carers are, and do. Although we have 12 different award categories, including awards for those who support carers, we hope the ceremony raises awareness of all carers, making us all more mindful of the challenges they face, and how we can all come together to become a more carer friendly community.

Celebrating Carers 2016 will be held on 14th October at Fry’s Club in Keynsham, 5-7pm. For more information, to nominate for one of the awards, or to request a ticket, click here.

Carer Led and Carer Choice

When you hear the word ‘meeting’, you might envisage people in suits sat around a table discussing the weekly numbers or looking at graphs with arrows pointing up. Team meetings at the Carers’ Centre are a world apart from this, and though we do talk about important matters (like Carers Week and our wellbeing festival), we also have a lot of laughs.

In our most recent team meeting, one of our Carers Support Officers Lorraine wrote a poem about the work of the newly formed Carers Outreach Team. It was so good we’ve decided to make it the feature of this week’s blog – enjoy!

Carer support is branching out

It’s getting much more local,

CSOs will have the chance

To be a bit more vocal
