This Carers Week we’re launching a new phone system that is staffed from 8:15 to 12noon on weekdays by our specialist carer support officers. You can call free on 0800 0388 885 to get confidential advice, support and information about caring on this dedicated Support Line.
Our Chief Executive David Trumper says that looking after someone can leave you with lots of questions.
“Navigating the health and social care system, juggling work and finances, balancing caring and other family responsibilities, as well as planning for the future is very challenging.”
“Sometimes it’s good to talk to someone who understands and can help point you in the right direction and connect you with others going through the same thing. Our free and confidential Support Line, staffed by experienced and friendly Support Officers, is here to help you feel in control of your caring role.”
Becoming a carer can happen overnight, affecting employment, income, social relationships and self-confidence. Carers can often be at a loss as to where to turn. The Support Line will be a link to free guidance for carers – new to caring or otherwise – to help them manage the stresses and strains of looking after someone.
We’ve also created a dedicated email address for support questions, firstname.lastname@example.org which you can email any time. The new email address is part of our work to increase our digital services and encourage carers to get support online.
Carer Support Officer Rose, who forms part of the Support Line staff, says some carers are just happy to have someone there to listen.
“Very often people call with questions about how to cope emotionally with caring and needing someone to talk to. Sometimes it’s enough for carers to just talk through on the phone what’s going on and discuss their options, or other times I’ll refer them through to our emotional support services and courses, or other local services,” says Rose.
“The other common query is benefit entitlements or help with funding – sometimes people just don’t know where or how to start that process because it is confusing. I point them in the right direction or if they have a complex query, I’d signpost them over to Citizen’s Advice for more detailed information.”
If you’re a carer, you can call the support line on 0800 0388 885 between 8:15 and noon weekdays. Outside of those hours a message can be left. Carers can also email email@example.com
